Silk artisans from Como

The culture of silk in Como dates back to the 15th century, when Ludovico Sforza forced farmers to grow mulberry trees to feed silkworms. In the following centuries, this city became the city of silk par excellence, to the point that in the 18th century 93% of the land in Como was dedicated to growing mulberry trees. Spinning and weaving establishments were established around them. With the industrialization of Lombardy in the second half of the 19th century, Como became a leading European producer and exporter of its precious fabrics. Today, thanks to the introduction of the latest technologies, in Como not only silk is produced, but also a large number of high-quality fabrics are produced to supply the fashion and accessories sector.
